PRIDE

Lately, I’ve been watching a video by Dr. Kent Hovind called the Leviathan. The main thing he was talking about was pride. That is a great video and I highly recommend it for people who are dealing with pride in there life.

Anyway, his video spured me on to study pride, so I looked up the Dictionary’s definition for pride.

1. satisfaction with self: the happy satisfied feeling somebody experiences when having or achieving something special that other people admire took great pride in his work

2. proper sense of own value: the correct level of respect for the importance and value of your personal character, life, efforts, or achievements Defeat didn't damage her pride.

3. feeling of superiority: a haughty attitude shown by somebody who believes, often unjustifiably, that he or she is better than others Her pride prevented her from making many friends.

4. source of personal satisfaction: something such as an achievement or possession that somebody feels especially pleased and satisfied with.

Did you notice two different definitions in there? Definition 1,2,and 4 are different from definition 3. Definitions 1,2, and 4 are a good sense of pride, and definition 3 is a bad sense of pride, why?

Well, look at it this way, this is definitions 1,2, and 4. You were at a garage sale and you found an AR 15 assembly kit for $12,000. You buy it and take it home, and when you get there you set it on the table. You open the box and begin to put it to gether, and when and if you put it to gether correctly you put it on you wall in your hunting room next to your deer head you shot the year before. You stand back and look at it, and you have pride in your work.

Do you see the good pride?

Here is an example of definition 3, you were walking in Walmart, and you have a high paying job and you took a shower, brushed your hair, brushed your teeth, put on your expensive suite, tie, and shoes, and you have big expensive truck.

And you are walking down the produce isle and you see a old man who does not have a high paying, did not take a shower that morning, he did not brush his teeth that morning, he wore a old t-shirt with some holes and stains, and old pare of pants with holes in the knees, and he wore beat up shoes, and he had a old hammered truck. And has you walk past him with you nose in the air and a discussted look on your face you think, “I am so glad I am not him! I keep clean! I ware good clothes! I don’t smell like body odor!”

Do you see the bad pride?

Now, lets look at this from a biblical prospective.

In the Bible, it shows you what happens when you have good pride and it shows you what happens when you have bad pride.

Here are some verses to support my first example:

James 1:9, “The brothers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position.”

Galatians 6:4, “Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else.”

Here is a verse to support my second example:

Proverbs 8:13, “To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”

Proverbs 11:2, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

Proverbs 13:10, “Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.”

Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Proverbs 29:23, “A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.”

Galatians 6:4, “Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else.”

The rich man in Walmart really did not follow this verse! (Galatians 6:4)

Isaiah 25:11, “They will spread out their hands in it, as a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim. God will bring down their pride despite the cleverness of their hands.”

Daniel 4:37, “Now, Nebuchadnezzar, praised and exalt and glorify the King of Heaven, because every thing He does is right and all His ways are just. And those who walk in pride He is able to humble them.”

According to this verse, the rich man has a chance to be humbled, if you, follower of Jesus Chirst , are willing to humble yourself and witness to him about Jesus Christ our Lord!

So, which one are you? Are you the prideful man in Walmart, or are you like Nebuchadnezzar in the verse above?

Let me know what you think.

God Bless,
Apollos
